It was observed that bauxite mining exerts harmful impact over the various component of environment. In India, bauxite mining was reported from Udgiri, district—Kolhapur of Maharashtra. This ecologically sensitive and fragile region in Kolhapur district has now been subjected to developmental activities such as dams, mining, road construction, sugar industries, etc. Bauxite mining is one such major open cast mining activity which has significant negative impact on the local environment.For the present study, two bauxite deposits namely Ringewadi and Velas located in Kolhapur (high-level) and Raigad (coastal) district of western Maharashtra respectively have been selected. The study area i.e. two bauxite mines at village Udgiri, Dist-Kolhapur, forms a part of globally acknowledged biodiversity rich Western Ghats which are now under tremendous pressure. The present study is an attempt to trace out the impacts of bauxite mining on soil.Reflecting photomicrograph showed the concretionary, brecciated, and pisolitic bauxite having pale earthy color, weak pleochroism, as gibbsite encompassed by dark-colored hematite. Lateritic bauxite deposits produced from the Deccan flows of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra showed similar properties as reported by Khanapurkar et Morphological, microstructural and mineralogical dataset of bauxite
